The Eremo Madonna delle Grazie is located on the magnificent highland of Avola antica an area where there are traces of hermitical life dating back to the Byzantine period.

Founded by the Capuchins in 1580 outside the walls of the original site of Avola, the monastery was destroyed by the devastating earthquake of 1693.

In 1729, Giuseppe Alessi started the re-construction of the building that soon became an ideal place of prayer and meditation.

Recently restored, the Eremo has recovered its original magnificence: its beautiful courts ands its sober interiors still maintain the unique atmosphere of the past.

The monastery, immersed in a beautiful countryside, faces a breathtaking landscape and it is the ideal starting point for a visit to the most important towns of art and culture in eastern Sicily (Avola, Siracusa, Noto, Palazzolo, Scicli, Ragusa Ibla, Modica...) and for a variety of excursions such as Cava Grande ( a stupendous creek amongst the rocks where a watercourse forms picturesque, little lakes); the necropolis of Pantalica ( of the XIIIth century b.C.); Villa Tellaro (a roman villa of the IVth century b.C. with beautiful mosaics).

A few kilometres towards the coast, you will find a large choice of beautiful beaches and natural harbours; you can visit Vendicari (an enchanting natural reserve), Marzamemi (a suggestive fishermen’s village) and the small town of Portopalo di Capo Passero, at the farthest end of Sicily.
